Can box turtles eat sunflower seeds?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

My box turtle seems extremely interested in the sunflower seed mix I use for my bird feeder. I would like to see if she would eat the seeds, but I don’t want to risk it unless I know for sure that it is safe. It is a mix, so it does have other things in it.

Growing sunflowers from bird mix?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird Feeder with 4 Comments

I put out bird feeders filled with a sunflower seed mix but the squirrels spilled the seeds all over the ground now the seeds have sprouted and are 3-5 inches tall. Will sunflowers bloom from this bird mix? If so how long will they take to flower (has already been 6-8 weeks)?

How can I advertise my bird feeder?

Its quite close to the house, about 2 metres away, hanging on a handmade bird table. No birds seem to visit it!! we’re using scones with riasans, birdseed (sunflower seeds, and other thigns thats in it like peanuts) shreddies and bits of toast. How can we get birds to come pay us a visit?!

Do winter season birds have new borns this time of year ?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I have sparrows, cardinals and blue jays go to my feeding site and have noticed sometimes for example the blue jay grabs a few seeds and darts away flying quickly to another place , I’m wondering if it could be a nest or do these breeds wait for spring for new borns.

Does anybody here like the wild birds such that you feed them daily?

My dad helped me build a big bird feeder when I was a kid back around 1962, and now that I’m retired early and live in the woods, I built a couple of replicas of the one he and I built. They hold about 8 pounds of wild bird seed each, and we hang tube feeders down both sides since we have them mounted on wooden posts, and it’s so wonderful to watch all the Cardinals and Blue Buntings and other blue birds and sparrows and finches, etc., that come around plentifully each day and bring such beauty to the woods wherein my wife and I live. I was just wondering if anybody else here ever enjoyed feeding the wild birds and watching them come around to "dine". They’re sure getting spoiled to the "recipe" of seeds we put together for the purpose of attracting the Cardinals and all the smaller birds too, and the Mourning Doves too. How about your experiences feeding wild birds. Do you enjoy it too?

With this brutal winter right now , how would birds (like the ones I’m feeding in my back yard daily)survive. I get mostly sparrows and a few cardinals and junco to the feeding area daily consisting of seeds and wheat bread. What would they do for food in these conditions if not for people ?

Bird experts wanted. (Not a pet question)?

So, I want to add a bird feeder, and I want to know what kind of nuts the birds would be most interested in feeding on. I know Cardinals like seeds and berries, so would they like grapes? And would roasted peanuts be dangerous for them, or would it not? The roasted peanuts have salt on them. Is that okay? Also, what would chickadees, robins, and morning doves like?
