How to keep black birds away from my small bird feeders?

I put black sunflower seeds out for the finches as they seem to like it. But I end up getting invaded by the blackbirds. How do I keep the blackbirds away?

Problem with tube type wild bird feeder?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird Feeder with 3 Comments

How can I get the feed to keep going down into the cups? The birds peck it out, but it never goes back into the feeder cup. I have to go out and use a wire hook i made up to get it back in the cups so the birds can reach it again. It is a 4 port, about 18 inches tall, the cups are closer to the bottom, so yo’d think the weight would push the seed down into the cups. Very frustrating. It is a plastic tube maybe 1.5 inches wide, and I use black oil sunflower seed (not the shelled kind)
sminthian1980: It is the "convertible" type, you can rotate the cup and it changes into the "slit", but no I have it set for regular seed.
Everyone else, thanks but I have heard birds "like" the black oil sunflower seed best and they do like it from what I’ve seen. I might need a different style feeder. In the winter I can just toss it on the snow and they ground feed alot. For finches, who like thistle, I use one of those sack feeders for those guys, they love that thistle sack!

How do I attract a greater variety of birds to my bird feeders?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird Feeder with 5 Comments

I live in the Midwest and enjoy feeding the birds. I feed sunflower seeds, suet cakes, thistle, and sugar water. I also have a bird bath. I get a nice variety of cardinals, sparrows, chickadees, finches, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, and even an occasional duck — but is there something could offer to bring in rarer birds? Like Orioles? Bluebirds? Doves? More? I live near a creek, greenway and several large, heavily wooded parks.
Thanks — all your answers are great; I’ll give them a try. Unfortunately, I can’t leave a thumbs up — "Pollice verso" — for all of you as a "Level 1," but if I could, I would.

Hey there I feed the birds in my backyard. I use Wagner’s deluxe blend bird food and usually attract the same birds like sparrows, 1 or 2 cardinals, finches, morning doves and sometimes pigeons. I live in longisland ny closer to the nyc border. I wanted to know if anybody has any tips on attracting more of a different variety of birds. Thanks in advance

How can I attract gold finches to my bird feeders?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird Feeder with 1 Comment

I have several bird feeders in my backyard. Some contain sunflower seed, some contain wild bird mix, and two of them contain thistle (they’re the long, skinny, cylinder type).
Lots of birds come to my feeders, but very seldom do I see gold finches.
What can I do to attract them?
Thanks!

What Sound Attracts Birds?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird House with 2 Comments

Can anyone tell me what sound attracts birds into our yard? More likely house finches and cardinals !!!

ALRIGHT! I'm SICK of them! Now how….?

How do I get rid of flocks of black birds?

I have two poles with a total of 8 feeders on them. For the first few weeks of May & June, I had cardinals, gold finches, Downy woodpeckers, purple house finches, nuthatches and chickadees.

But all of a sudden the grackles and starlings took over and all I ever see are occasional blue jays who aren’t afraid of the "black plague."

Is there a way to selectively get rid of certain birds? I use a variety of feed including safflower. Peanuts and sunflower seeds are gone in one day. Shiny, sparkling things up in the trees have no effect. I don’t want to put up a fake owl as I will get NO birds!

So, now what?

This is getting expensive!
I live in a residential neighborhood so I don’t dare use all the fire power suggested.
MsLucy!

I didn’t invite the black birds. Until this year, after 20 or so years of feeders, all the birds were the "nice" variety. Many colors, songs, etc. Hummingbirds too.

I think the black birds weasled their way in here.

My idea was that maybe someone knew of seed combination that they couldn’t stand.
Don’t get so bent out of shape!

How long will it take for me to hand feed the birds on our apartment porch?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I have doves ,grackles, cardinals, sparrows, finches, and even large crows sometimes..and lately some doves and sparrows will sit on the porch while my hubby and I are either on the porch or about to step out on to the porch..but, then after a bit, they will usually fly away! How or when will they be "unafraid" of us..and stay a bit longer or come towards us to be fed? Do you think that this can happen at all? I love the birds alot!
Thanks!

I have 2 bird feeders right next to each other hanging in a tree and all I am getting are?

a family of house sparrows. I get a red cardinal that comes around occasionally, but he will only eat from the ground. I can’t understand why he won’t eat from the feeder. But, I am waiting for some really pretty birds to come and they won’t. What will make the pretty birds like the yellow finches come? I know there is a certain feeder for finches. Will they come to other feeders or does it have to be a special finch feeder?
