How do I attract a greater variety of birds to my bird feeders?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird Feeder with 5 Comments

I live in the Midwest and enjoy feeding the birds. I feed sunflower seeds, suet cakes, thistle, and sugar water. I also have a bird bath. I get a nice variety of cardinals, sparrows, chickadees, finches, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, and even an occasional duck — but is there something could offer to bring in rarer birds? Like Orioles? Bluebirds? Doves? More? I live near a creek, greenway and several large, heavily wooded parks.
Thanks — all your answers are great; I’ll give them a try. Unfortunately, I can’t leave a thumbs up — "Pollice verso" — for all of you as a "Level 1," but if I could, I would.

Feeders for Wild Birds?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird House with 3 Comments

For the Winter, my family places feeders around the backyard. We get a variety of birds like blue jays and cardinals. We also realized that we are getting some morning doves, but the feeders we have are too small, a small house shaped feeder and three stocking feeders, is there a certain type of feeder that i need, is there anyway i could make a simple feeder for the "big birds". Any advice would be nice.

Why does my dog bark at chipmunks, but not at birds?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird House with 6 Comments

It’s the strangest thing. My dog sits in front of the window all day and looks outside, it’s one of his favorite things to do. All sorts of birds come and go throughout the day, sparrows, mourning doves, cardinals, crows. He doesn’t bark at any of them. In fact, just the other day a sparrow got into the house and he hardly paid it any heed! He just glanced up as it flew by every so often. He was more excited by my activity trying to catch it than by the bird. (I got it out safe and sound.)

But he goes crazy any time he sees a chipmunk outside. The chipmunk is about the size of a sparrow and has the same patterns and coloring. He barks and jumps up and down and turns circles for a long time after it leaves. Why is that?
My dog is a maltese.

Attract more birds to garden?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird Feeder with 3 Comments

Hey there I feed the birds in my backyard. I use Wagner’s deluxe blend bird food and usually attract the same birds like sparrows, 1 or 2 cardinals, finches, morning doves and sometimes pigeons. I live in longisland ny closer to the nyc border. I wanted to know if anybody has any tips on attracting more of a different variety of birds. Thanks in advance

Help me identify a bird call I heard?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird House with 1 Comment

I just heard it not long ago, around 5 in the morning. I’ve heard the call before, and my memory seems to be connecting it with an owl I once saw… though, I can’t find any lists of owls in my area to search for sound clips, so it’s difficult. :/

I live in a fair sized industrial city, in Southern Ontario… so it’s not often I see more than house wrens, starlings, blue jays, mourning doves, pigeons, cardinals, sea gulls and crows. Our wildlife is very limited.

Anyway, it’s still very dark and the morning chorus hasn’t been sounding for long. Started up shortly after I heard this call. I want to say the bird has a good chance of being nocturnal, but really… I don’t know enough to make such assumptions.

I’m going to try to describe this in as much detail as possible.

The call would last for about 6 seconds, pause for closer to 10, then it would sound again.
The sound it would make was somewhere between a very repetitive gentle hoot and a coo.
It repeated quickly, maybe 4 times per second, no pause between the sounds.
The pitch was a little bit higher than a mourning dove’s.
The volume was pretty low. Very eerie. I’m not sure if the bird was distant, or if it was just soft.
If my memory serves me right, then the other times in the past that I heard the call would have been between 9 PM and Midnight.

That’s… about all I can give you.

Any ideas whatsoever will help. Maybe it’s not an owl at all? I’ll be looking up every suggestion to try and confirm.

Decline in the amount of birds in garden?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird Feeder with 7 Comments

I live in Florida on the east coast and have noticed a dramatic decline in the amount of birds that visit my garden. Has anyone else noticed this? I used to get loads of grackles, blue jays and cardinals but at the moment all I get is mourning doves. Does anyone know why this is? I’ve never had this before in the 12 years I’ve lived here, it’s very disturbing. (I’m still putting the nuts/feed out for them but it’s always eaten by the morning time by the raccoons).

Please answer this, I really need info?

I found a little blue-green egg with no markings in my yard. It was one of three, but the other two got crushed by the nest (it got blown down in a storm and it landed on top of two of the eggs). What kind of egg is it? We have all kinds of birds around here, like robins, starlings, cardinals, bluejays, mourning doves, sparrows, crows, pigeons, kingfishers, and even a few scissor-tailed flycatchers. The nest was on a drainpipe on my house, but I never saw what kind of birds built it. I’ve been candling the egg every couple of days, and the baby seems to be growing (it’s almost filled up the whole egg now, there’s just a little bit of space left at the small end). How do I take care of it once it hatches? I really don’t want to turn it over to an animal rehabilitator unless I have no other choice (and I have my reasons for that). I’ve been keeping it warm in a little artificial nest made of tissue. Do you think it will hatch soon? What do I feed it once it does?
I’ve tried doing searches on all the bird species we have in our area, but I haven’t been able to find any useful info on how to care for a baby bird (especially since I don’t know for sure what kind of bird it is).
Also, how often will I have to feed it? How noisy will it be? I don’t mind noise (I already have a noisy, foulmouthed parrot), I’d just like to know how much noise to expect once it hatches.

How long will it take for me to hand feed the birds on our apartment porch?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird Feeder with 2 Comments

I have doves ,grackles, cardinals, sparrows, finches, and even large crows sometimes..and lately some doves and sparrows will sit on the porch while my hubby and I are either on the porch or about to step out on to the porch..but, then after a bit, they will usually fly away! How or when will they be "unafraid" of us..and stay a bit longer or come towards us to be fed? Do you think that this can happen at all? I love the birds alot!
Thanks!
