Crazy Wild Cardinal?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird House with 2 Comments

We live in upstate NY. There is this wild cardinal who every single day, slams into one of our regular windows (not a sliding glass door, just a regular window). He/She flies into the lilac bush right outside the window and we see him flutter around a bit, then start slamming into it over and over. We thought he might see his reflection, but hes hitting the screen on the outside of the lower window, and he does this ONLY to this one window (not the one next to it, or any other windows).

We do have a lovebird and a parakeet in a cage together inside this room but they dont make much noise and i dont even think he can see them from where he hits (the other window has a much better view of our birds from the outside of our house).

He comes and goes all day. Just now i heard him singing loudly and slamming into it, then took off.

Please: ANY CLUE WHATTT is going on here????

Wild Cardinal slamming into window repeatedly??

well we moved our birds closer to the window to see if he reacted, and he actually didn’t end up coming back over (so its not b/c he wants to see them, if he did he would have come back). And we have slammed on the window and tried to scare him away. no luck. we just dont want to find him with a broken neck one of these days ..
thats what we thought… maybe its right but we tried looking through the screen&window ourselves from outside and its really hard to see through the screen to the reflection on the window…. we are going to put something up between the screen & window to show him there is no bird (if thats what he is seeing). Thanks.

Senior citizens, which is your bird feeder: wildly popular or mildly popular?

Are the birds eating up your grocery budget, or are they just fine? There’s no right or wrong answer here. Just give us some sort of commentary on the subject of seniors & their bird feeders. It might be location, equipment, cost of sunflower seeds, pests, or whatever. Give us the scoop.
These are wonderful answers. Thanks to all who answered.

How do I get rid of flocks of black birds?

I have two poles with a total of 8 feeders on them. For the first few weeks of May & June, I had cardinals, gold finches, Downy woodpeckers, purple house finches, nuthatches and chickadees.

But all of a sudden the grackles and starlings took over and all I ever see are occasional blue jays who aren’t afraid of the "black plague."

Is there a way to selectively get rid of certain birds? I use a variety of feed including safflower. Peanuts and sunflower seeds are gone in one day. Shiny, sparkling things up in the trees have no effect. I don’t want to put up a fake owl as I will get NO birds!

So, now what?

This is getting expensive!
I live in a residential neighborhood so I don’t dare use all the fire power suggested.
MsLucy!

I didn’t invite the black birds. Until this year, after 20 or so years of feeders, all the birds were the "nice" variety. Many colors, songs, etc. Hummingbirds too.

I think the black birds weasled their way in here.

My idea was that maybe someone knew of seed combination that they couldn’t stand.
Don’t get so bent out of shape!

Why are the birds no longer coming to the feeder?

I moved about 2 years ago and started feeding the birds shortly after that. I had a nice mixture of birds… chickadees, nuthatches, sparrows, juncos, blue jays, cardinals, gold finches (lots of them). So this summer I increased the number of bird feeders and types of food that I offer… thistle, black oil and mixed (each in their separate feeder). I also have suet & a ‘suet ball’ from the meat department out there.

I’ve always had a bunch of birds and now… I’m lucky if I see a couple of nuthatches and woodpeckers a day! What in the heck happened? Any ideas and/or suggestions for what I should do?
YES birds do fly South… BUT the birds that I specifically mentioned do not leave Pennsylvania for the winter! I fed these birds last winter and this summer!

WHAT TYPE OF BIRD IS THIS?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird House with 2 Comments

We have no idea what type of bird this is, it lives near our house & we wanna know what kind of bird it is. Its definitely not a savannah sparrow because it has red and has a black neck, and savannah sparrows don’t have that. The sound of it is similar to a cardinal. Here’s 2 different pictures of it, their not great, but their all we got:

Its not a bullfinch, bullfinches dont have the white stripe on their head like this one.
No, its not a chipping sparrow either, the bird in my pictures has a white stripe on the side of its head, a chipping sparrow has a black stripe, and the bird in my picture has a thinner beak that curves down slightly.

The dogs i'm pet sitting for won't eat and keep throwing up….?

both are older goldens (10 & 14yrs). One stays out of trouble but I saw him eat some plaster that the other one had knocked onto the floor…from the wall that he was chewing on. The one that keeps chewing on the cornor of the wall also has torn apart the baby gate used to keep him in the kitchen(this is why the wall was eaten, he was trying to escape), ate one of my socks (which he barfed up this morning), and ate trash from the bathroom (including 3 used tampons that he pooped out). They both wont eat and keep barfing(the one that ate the sock does at least still this morning). I cant get ahold of the owner to ask her what she wants me to do. They are drinking alot of water but not eating and the sock eater still acts like he doesnt feel good. The other one just wont eat but is perky as ever. Any suggestions? I’m thinking about giving the sock eater some veggie oil so help anything else he ate slide on out.

Why do birds fly into windows?

Posted by Filed Under Cardinal Bird House with 8 Comments

My house has a large bay window and this one bird–a cardinal–flies & hits it all day long, everyday. Why do birds do this? Is it something about seeing its reflection in the window? I know it is maddening hearing it bang against the window all day and night!

Pet name poll: Do you think Pinky and Perky are cute pet names?

Sounds like something I’d want to cuddle with.

Laurel & Hardy came in a close second. (I know, I know)……..
